In the Basque region of Northern Spain there is an old tradition of Gastronomic Societies, where men with a passion for food & wine meet to cook, eat and drink. One such group of friends believed that they could produce fine wines to complement their culinary prowess. The result was Bodegas Beronia, named after the Berones, a warring Celtic tribe who inhabited the area in the 3rd Century BC.
The wines were met with great critical acclaim, and Beronia has now grown to become one of the most popular Riojas in Spain.
The winery nestles in the foothills of Mendiguerra, in Rioja Alta, widely acknowledged to be the best of all the Rioja areas. Surrounded by the Sierra de Cantabria to the north and the Sierra de la Demanda to the south, Atlantic influences and clay soils with a high chalk content combine to give the perfect growing conditions.
Winemaker Matias Calleja's dedication and attention to detail are legendary. The wines are aged in specially coopered casks of mixed American and French oak which perfectly complement the meticulously selected fruit from carefully tended vineyards, and then gently mature to the sounds of Gregorian chants in the cool cellars below the winery.
No surprise then, that Beronia wines are consistently recognised with many accolades and awards both in Spain and around the world.
