|David Traeger wines was established in 1985 at Nagambie and he has currently 20 hectares (50 acres) under vine. David uses the winemaking facilities at Sommerset Crossing Winery in Seymour to make the wines - this is an arrangement which is beneficial to both wineries, avoiding much unnecessary duplication of equipment.|
David has two vineyards, which he operates. The first at Greytown, which was planted in 1892 predominantly to Shiraz, with a new section being grafted to Verdelho. The second vineyard is at Avenel, which is planted to Verdelho. Verdelho is the grape that has given David Traeger wines it's marketing edge. It is from this rather unfashionable varietal, that David makes the country's best Verdelho dry white wine. He has been making Verdelho for the last 9 vintages.
Verdelho originates from Portugal, where it is one of the main varietal used in the production of Madeira. Traditionally in Australia it has been used to produce a sweet fortified wine in the style of Madeira, however, it is still popular in the Hunter Valley of NSW and Swan Valley in WA for the production of full bodied dry white wines. The variety achieves full ripeness easily and manages to retain its fruity character.
David Traeger and Brown Brothers are the only Victorian producers of this variety and plantings here consist of 11 ha (27.5 acres) in the Goulburn Valley. It is interesting to note that at the turn of the century Verdelho was Victoria's second most widely planted grape variety.
