GLENFIDDICH - 21 Year Old

Share |
Description:
A 21 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky from the Speyside region of the Scottish Highlands.

The taste of this Cuban rum-finished Glenfiddich is full and rich, initially with a toffee sweetness becoming more dry with spice notes and hints of sweet tobacco and leather.

At the Glenfiddich Distillery, casks of Cuban rum were decanted and 21 Year Old Glenfiddich filled into the same casks, to take on the unique character.

Review: Wow !
This big orange box arrived and it set me wondering (for several heart stopping moments before I opened it) as to who might have sent me such a gift, whatever it was. The "www.thedrinkshop.com" gave me no immediate clues, except to the possible contents, someone had sent me some alcohol :-)
To say that I was surprised to see that the box contained this bottle of amazing malt is one of the understatements of the decade. The note was simple "Isn't it nice to receive surprises, Sláinte, Kevin"
Kevin is a friend in Co Cork, who's book I had proofread last year prior to it being published by Trafford.com. Some time later, when my Mother-In-Law wanted to publish her book, it was Kevin who recommended Trafford to us. In return, when Kathleen's book was published, Kevin received a generous commission, and the Malt was his way of saying thank you.
Right, now the story is out of the way - the review of the drink itself :-
Wow ! (again)
The tasting notes are actually pretty spot on - an immediate hefty noseful of bananas, figs and toffee, especially the toffee. The rum cask conditioning is mostly responsible for this aspect I suppose, with later overtones of demerara sugar peeping through. First taste was taken straight, but subsequently a little spring water was added to get the esters flowing. I like to use a low calcium water for my whisky, and Aqua-Pura is a good one to start with. I have been trying to find another outlet for Glenlivet Spring water (other than Waitrose) but have so far been unsuccessful - this would be an ideal partner for this majestic Malt.
On tasting neat, the first impression was of a sudden semi-sharp "ping" of the taste buds, followed by the beautifully soft and mellow warmth that the 21 year maturation gives. After the water was added, other tones appeared. Citrus fruit, oak and an appealing smokiness became apparent. It did not take too much concentration either, as these were easily identifiable, whilst not being too heavy.
One of the longest finishes I have ever encountered in a Malt of this type rounded off my tasting along with another blessing in Gaelic to my good friend Kevin, Sláinte Mbor!
The biggest surpise was the price tag. I visited this website to see what other delights they offered and the £60 price tag made me appreciate this whisky even more. I wonder if I can persuade anyone to get me another bottle in time for Christmas?
Bad points : none.
