Description:
The recipe for the Tonic wine is attributed to the original French monks who settled at Buckfast Abbey in the 1880's. Base wines from Spain, known as mistellas, were imported and to these were added the tonic ingredients according to the old recipe.

By the 1920's 1400 bottles were sold annually, 500 from Buckfast and the remainder by post. In 1927 a London wine merchant was visiting the Abbey, and in conversation with the Abbot, Anscar Vonnier, it was decided that the monks would continue to make the Tonic wine with the distribution and sale to be carried out by a separate marketing company.

In order to broaden its appeal the Tonic was changed slightly from a rather severe patent medicine to a smoother, more mature medicated wine.
Having taken on the marketing of "Buckfast" the distributing company adopted a reserved promotional approach resulting in the widespread appreciation of the product nationally and internationally.

In modern times it continues to be made by the monks of Buckfast Abbey along the same lines and according to the same basic recipe as used in the very early days. The main difficulty lies in the successful addition of inert substances to a base wine - a living and natural entity.

The selection of the base wine is thus of prime importance. Today the base mistellas come from France providing the ideal medium for the skill and expertise of the monks to produce a finished product round and mature to the most discerning of tastes.

Review: what is the secret???? it is the only drink that gives you that lovely warm feeling and a pleasant drunk. not a Neds drink, it used to be when it was cheaper but it is quite expensive now, an acquired taste but once you get the first sip that is you for life.

Review: Anyone thinks the taste of tonics changed recently?? Everyone round my way is saying it but I don't notice any difference and iv been binning it 15years now. They all seemed to be drinking 'Irish Meadow' which is like a cheap runny Baileys.

Review: I grew up around the "BUCK" and never found it nice to taste, when I moved to England many years ago, A friend got me a bottle for Christmas, and I could not bear to drink it, but had to because it was a gift, bloody horrible! However I know a couple of Scots who swear by it, and search the locale to find it. So I suppose one man's drink is another man's poison.

Review: Hello fellow Buckie drinkers. I have been drinking the stuff for a good few years now and can't get enuff of the stuff. Just a message to let everyone know that the numbers on the bottle don't mean anything. I e-mailed the abbey in Devon and they say it is the bottle mould number and has no bearing to the contents. You can try and argue but that is straight from the horses mouth. Peace Out!!!!

Review: Buckfast have been given all the bad press due to neds drinking it and mixing it with other alchol related products . I myself have drunk it for over 15 years and have yet to have the urge to kick someones head in. Tonic wine is what some people might call an aquired taste but once you get the first few mouthful over and get the unusual taste there will be no stopping you.

Review: I work in an off-licence & am yet to have anyone but gentlemen of the road buy this stuff. One nicknamed "Crazy Horse" even has "BUCKFAST" tattooed round his navel; only last week thought we were having a break in by the frantic hammering on the door 30 mins after hours -- it's the horse craving his 5th bottle of the day. Forget all this hype about monks & secret recipies tho, I always recommend Mansion House or Frosty Jacks cider to the alcoholic, way cheaper by volume.

Review: I came up to Glasgow for work and was told to try the tipple known as Buckfast! It was explained to me how it was a very popular drink up in Scotland yet came from Devon, nearer my own location in fact. I had never heard of it and after consuming a couple of bottles I became increasingly aware of it's magical powers!! Never have I felt so good and leary at the same time! Giggled my head off for hours! Looking forward to another interesting night on Buckfast!!

Review: I represent the Lurgan faction of the Buckfast drinker club (Craigavon, Northern Ireland chapter). Buckfast is the pillar of society in our small market town. We are raised with Buckfast on our dummies, Buckfast sausages on a Saturday morning and a bottle or two of the Lurgan Red on a Saturday night, drank from the obligatory brown bag.
Buckfasts mix of alcohol, caffiene and other such chemicals blends together to form a highly drinkable and effective pre-bar carry out. The medicinal properties go a long way to preventing a hangover the next day too.
The buzz attained from one or two "tens a wine" is really something quite spectacular and something which other similarly priced wines fail to produce.
Buckfast represents a whole generation in Lurgan and is something that is being passed to the next generation. An integral ingredient in a true Lurgan mans diet, Buckfast remains one of the best tonic wines available for a fiver from the Batcave.

Review: After going to see some friends of mine up Scotland it was recommended that I should not leave without a couple of bottles of 'bucky'?. I must say with my first glass full it tasted foul (compared to the usual house white wine!!) but after another one it began to grow on me!! Once you get used to the quirky taste you won't look back, it gives you a nice warm glow and a nice feeling in general!! Although a labled as a 'neds' drink, its definitely an undiscovered gem for the masses........spread the word!!

Review: Aahhh! The sweet, sweet aroma that dances through the atmos' once that gold cap is 'cracked' is never forgotten. Your first 'up and downey' of the intriguing green bottle as the thick, sweet and strangely compelling 'buckie' washes your throat, captivates your very imagination as well as your pallate.
Do not believe the hype regarding 'neds' and 'kappa slappas' only drinking this prize nectar, I drink it, and i am a retired barrister of 30 years and a respectable member of the community.
'Broon wine, broon wine makes me feel fine!!'
Ed - Not Kappa Slappers :0) - surely worse than Chavs!
