Extra Old is the recipient of several Gold and Grand Gold awards from well-respected International Quality and Spirits competitions. In 2001, Extra Old was awarded its fifth Grand Gold at the Monde Selection in Brussels. The brand was also awarded a trophy (the highest award possible) at the 2001 International Spirits Challenge in London.

Mount Gay Rum Extra Old Barbados Rum is a skilful blend of the finest old spirits, carefully selected from aged reserves. It is the result of hundreds of years of respecting the time-honoured traditions of rum production. Once sipped and savoured, the connoisseur experiences the warmth of a well-rounded, exceedingly smooth, light bodied spirit; possessing such finesse as only time can bring.

The colour of brilliant amber-brown with a clarity of brilliant luminescence.

The first nose has good oak, dry and a good balance of fragrances with a moderate intensity of general aroma with the second nose evidently sweeter and more aromatic than the first nose. The predominant aroma is the rich, mellow, oak character which is in perfect balance with the sweet, fuity notes and light banana-type aroma of a well matured double distilled rum. Light, burnt-wood character with subtle sugar cane notes with a taste that is light bodied with an excellent level of well-digested wood characters which harmonises well with the aroma.

Review: A superb drink whic I personally would not like to waste in a cocktail. I agree with other reviewers who akin it more to a good cognac. However, will you ever be able to supply the Mount Gay 1703? Even at the after tour tasting, when all other samples were free, I had to pay extra for a small taste. The whole experience was remarkable - a quantum leap in rum taste sensation; even beyond the XO!! Expensive but justified for this "Liquid Gold."

Review: I tried this rum after Doorly's XO and found it to be a much richer and smoother drink. It has to be drunk neat or on the rocks as to mix it would loose all the flavour. Having since tried some pricier rums, I have to admit this was remarkably god value as in my opinion it is better than most El Dorado's.

Review: After trying a lot of the more baseline/value rums out there I decided to purchase a bottle from the next tier up and after reading a few reviews decided upon the Mount Gay Extra Old - partly as I will be in Barbados soon, so felt that I should get a head start! It is extremely smooth and tastes fantastic. I preferred to drink it neat and occasionally on the rocks. A must try for anyone who likes rum and can appreciate the finer bottles out there. Main tastes were quite fruity and oaky with a nice warm comforting after-taste experience. The main thing was the surprise I had at how good it was compared to the small cost!

Review: I went on holiday to Barbados a non rum drinker,my first Mountgay rum was their sugar cane brandy,having enjoyed that,I went and did the Mountgay rum tour (well worth a visit),this was where we got too try the extra old,What a great rum aged in oak barrels, it has a really smooth distinctive taste and a great flavour.

Review: Oh now this is Rum, but different, How is it different? well its actually quite dry for a rum, Give it to someone not used to aged rum without telling him what it is and you will get told, 'its cognac' or 'a really nice bourbon' or even a 'single malt' Rum drinkers will know the taste though, lighter and more crisp then most Anejo rums, the molasses is there, but mostly you get tastes and scents of tropical fruits and burnt oak. It does really deserve to be up there with the finest spirits. Drink it neat or on the rocks.

Producer Information

Many people believe that rum was being produced on the Mount Gay Rum Estate from as early as 1663. However, the first surviving written evidence of this is a legal deed dated 20th February 1703. This document lists the property and the equipment found on it, equipment essential for the manufacture of rum. "Two stone windmills... one boiling house with seven coppers, one curing house and one still house."
This confirms that rum production was well underway by 1703, making Mount Gay Rum the oldest rum in Barbados, and more importantly, the world.
The Early Years...
The Mount Gay Rum Estate lies on a ridge in the northern most parish of Barbados (St. Lucy). In the 1600's this spot was known as Mount Gilboa and was divided into several small, separately owned sugar plantations. They were named after their respective owners: Tyrell, Jemmott, Jones, Pickering and Grey. Then, in the early 18th century, William Sandiford bought most of the land, consolidating it into a 280 acre plantation he renamed Mount Gilboa. It was passed on to his son, who sold it in 1747 to John Sober.
Sober and his son Cumberbatch were both absentee landlords, spending most of their time in England. By 1787, Cumberbatch needed someone to manage the affairs of the flourishing Mount Gilboa estate. He chose his good friend, Sir John Gay Alleyne. In 1801, after Sir John's death, Cumberbatch honored his friend by renaming the plantation Mount Gay Rum (a Mount Alleyne already existed at the time). The Sober family continued to run the property until 1860.
The Dawn of the Modern Era...
The next major influence on the Mount Gay Rum Plantation was Aubrey Ward, a prominent businessman who bought the estate outright in the early 1900's. He introduced new methods to meet the increasing demand for Mount Gay Rum, while strictly maintaining its traditional character.
Along with his business partner and marketing specialist John Hutson, he introduced Mount Gay Rum to the international market. These efforts were continued by his son Mr. Darnley DaCosta Ward until his death in 1989.
Toward the Future...
The Ward family continues to be involved with Mount Gay Rum distilleries, majority interest of which was acquired by the Remy Cointreau Group in 1989. This has led the company in a new direction and allowed it to benefit from the French multinational's extensive distribution and international marketing acumen. Mount Gay Rum now stands poised for an exciting future, well on the way to being discovered by connoisseurs of fine sprits around the world.
