Description:
Black Seal has a rich, intricate flavour, well balanced and nuanced with butterscotch, vanilla and caramel. Or, as expressed up by the Beverage Tasting Institute when they recently awarded it their highest honour, the Platinum Medal: 'Deep, assertive and highly flavoured. Very fragrant with herbal sharpness. At the finish there is a softness and elegance. A most complex, unusual spirit.'

In the spring of 1806, London wine & spirits merchant James Gosling set out from England aboard the chartered clipper Mercury with 10,000 dollars of merchandise bound for the Virginias. The voyage was a difficult one. Ninety-one consecutive days of calm left the crew and passengers in dire straits and the charter of Mercury was fast running out.

The ship eventually made port in St. Georges, Bermuda, where Gosling and his family decided to set up shop rather than press on to America.

James Gosling opened a shop on King's Parade, St George's in December 1806. To this day the company remains the oldest surviving business in Bermuda and is still a family concern.

The corks were secured in place with the use of black sealing wax, prompting people to refer to the brand as "Black Seal."

Review: A lovely dark smooth rum mixes well and good neat or \"grogged\". There is a spicy note in the finish that I am still working out almost a citrus butterscotch if that makes any sense, which sets it apart (but not necessarily better than) other dark rums.

Review: Many, many thanks for your shop! Finally, I found it! Hallelujah! A couple of years ago, we spent our holidays in Bermudas and found this wonderful rum, and drank it all the time! Back home in Austria, we got the longing for rum again and I called around to very many people (including them in Bermudas), to find out a reseller in London. This was before internet-ages, so it was a bit more difficult than today ;-) We finally found one (in Wandsworth, I don´t think it exist any more) and drank the rum very very very slowly. But, all things come to an end... BUT NOW, I found You!!! This rum makes the sun go up or down, leaves a smooth and warm feeling in your mouth and tummy... We think it is wonderful that you deliver to Austria - the hard and dry times are gone! Thanks, tina

Review: This Rum you will have to respect or it will knock you off your feet. It is not the smoothest Rum I have tried however it is a very bold and robust Rum.

Review: After trying many good Rums from Barbados (Mount Gay), Guyana (El Dorado) and Trinidad and Tobago (Angostura) I was bought this by accident and i still can't look back after this great Rum. Flavours are smooth and rounded and i cannot add a mixer to it without a bit of shame. A MUST to try for any enthusiast.

Review: I would really like to thank the Drink Shop for making Black Seal AND the Gold Rum available online. Do you realise that every time I come to the UK there are a few people who want me to bring rum over there to them? I am coming for Christmas and have given your information to my son to give to all these thirsty people. Now I only have to bring the B&B. :o)
Thanks again for lightening my load. Beth.
Ed: No thank you :-)

Review: I love this rum. We were on holiday in Bermuda in May and got stuck into their Dark n'Stormy cocktails straight away and basically lived on them for our 10 days holiday! Fantastic rum, gorgeous aroma and flavour and with the added ginger beer, makes it a great drink whilst basking in the warmth of Bermuda.

Review: My bar just had the Goslings rep in last week and although I am not a big rum fan...the lady did convert me into a damn good drinking session before I staggered back onto the bar...this is great...bit on the sweet side but great all the same. And now I've got a place to buy a bottle from...happy days ahead!!!

Review: Goslings Black Seal is THE most delicious dark rum available and at the price, its a seal steal!!
Try it on its own - a little sip and be enraptured by its sweet notes of vanilla and butterscotch. Go back to the same glass after just 10 minues and the flavours further intensify and you can detect the oak and rich caramel.
Inevitably, you'll make the famous Dark 'n' Stormy cocktail.
I'll stick a nip before bed - Yum :-D

Review: We've lived in Bermuda, and now we're back in blighty, we miss Goslings like we missed our family when we were there!
If you get a taste for Black Seal, there's no going back to any other Rum. Best drunk Bermudian style, as a "Dark & Stormy" on the rocks with ginger beer. Thankyou 'thedrinkshop' for helping us re-descover Bermuda!
Ed: It's a pleasure!

Review: Having spent some time in Bermuda, I am already very fond of Goslings rum. It beats the pants off any other rum. When mixed with ginger beer it becomes a "dark and stormy". My favourite drink. I have struggled to find an importer of it until today!!!!!!
Ed - Yippee - Have you tried Goslings Gold as well?

Producer Information

Gosling Brothers Ltd. imported its first barrels of Caribbean rum into Bermuda in 1860. Numerous different blends were tried until one was formulated and deemed ideal.
The result was a well-aged, extremely dark rum, which the firm dubbed "Old-Rum". For over 50 years the rum was sold only by draught, with local patrons bring in their own bottles to be filled. The rum continued to be sold exclusively out of the barrel until the First World War, when the company began filling champagne bottles reclaimed from the British Officer's mess. The corks were secured in place with the use of black sealing wax, prompting people to refer to the brand as "Black Seal."
It wasn't until many years later that Gosling Brothers adopted the image of the barrel juggling "black seal" on its labels. To this day, Gosling's Black Seal Rum is created according to the original family recipe from a premium blend of three-year old rums.
