1st May 1926: On the same day that 25,000 people in Glasgow staged a mass demonstration in support of the miners, master distillers at The Dalmore distillery - home of the world?s most expensive malt - decreed that a minute quantity of previous malt whisky was to be racked into three casks and stored for half a century.

Over the following decades whilst the nation endured a second World War, celebrated the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and witnessed man walking on the moon, the Dalmore 50-Year-Old was maturing at its own pace.

On 17 February 1978, the Dalmore 50-Year-Old was bottled with due ceremony. Of the sixty bottles produced only eight remain and the only bottle available for sale at the distillery has just been sold to a local collector - who cannot be named - for a price tag of ?5,000.

Bottled in a beautiful hand-blown crystal decanter, The Dalmore 50-year-old is a malt to be revered and its rarity appreciated.
Drew Sinclair, distillery manager at Dalmore distillery, said: "I joined the distillery 39 years ago when the 50-year-old was still maturing in casks. The malt was bottled into sixty beautifully crafted crystal decanters and over the past 26 years we have sold fifty-two bottles. It really is testament to the quality of our whisky that people have chosen to invest in this special malt and what makes me even happier in this case is that the bottle is staying in the area."
