Situated in the heart of Kent - The Garden of England - in Sittingbourne, Opies, formerly known as Bennett Opie, is one of the oldest private family-owned companies in the county - about to celebrate 125 years of business in 2005.
The Company has seen many changes over the years, none more so than in the last decade in particular, the Opies product range has expanded dramatically in new directions to build on the already popular range of cocktail garnishes and famous traditional Pickled Walnuts.
Says William Opie, 'We have to continually review our offering to meet changing consumer tastes and food trends. While there is still a place for the old favourites, we also like to develop new variations to keep our products fresh and interesting.'
Exciting additions in recent years include the Garden of England collection of speciality chutneys, an Organic range of condiments and an assortment of luxury Fruits in Liqueurs.
'New lines are constantly under development in our New Product Development kitchen,' adds William Opie. 'We painstakingly select the finest ingredients and blend many different variations by hand to ensure we have a high quality product, which delivers on flavour.'
The Company also is the sole importer for the world renown Monin Syrups, the world leaders in flavoured syrups for cocktails, coffee and desserts. Opies products are available to consumers in the United Kingdom through major Supermarkets and good independent stores, as well as stores in many other countries.
Many of the products are also packed in kitchen safe plastic foodservice jars, to meet modern caterers needs for food safe packaging. The company's state-of-the-art distribution centre ensures that it has the necessary facilities to offer swift, cost-efficient delivery to retail food, service, ingredients and exports to customers around the world.
Recently, the company has also invested heavily in high-speed packing equipment working in tandem with hand packing lines to improve efficiency.
In October 2001, Opies was awarded the higher-level EFSIS (European Food Standard Inspection Service) accreditation certificate, a leading food safety and quality standard. Opies is also a past winner of the Queen's Award for Export.
