2011 USA Beverage Tasting Institute Review. GOLD MEDAL
92 Points. Exceptional Rating. Clear. Attractive aromas of honeyed toasted pound cake, lemon pudding, celery pepper and dried flowers with a supple, dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body and a vibrant, tongue-warming citrus custard, prickly pear, and floral talc finish. A lively and flavourful gin that will shine in cocktails.
2009 International Wine and Spirit Competition, SILVER MEDAL 47% vol.+ London Dry Gin category, together with only Tanqueray 10 and Finsbury Platinum. The I.W.S.C. Chair Judge's (Angela Reddin) comments were 'Clean pure silver white spirit. The nose has an intricate complexity, high toned key notes of dried flowers with a firm core of juniper, coriander seed and citrus zest. Full flavoured and wonderfully aromatic; delivered with a surprising delicacy and smoothness, the floral/meadow flower complexity kicks back on the finish. Clean, generous and very precise, a very well made spirit indeed.'
The natural botanicals selected, are steeped in the spirit for at least 24 hours, contributing to a very soft release of the spirit on the palette, and no trace of 'after burn' normally associated with gin. The botanicals listed in alphabetical order are:- Organic Angelica Root, Organic Coriander, Organic Juniper Berries, Natural Heather, and Organic Savory Powder.
Review: I bought this for my Sister as she liked Gin & I must say she finds this much more refined that your supermarket usual brands, drinking it with slimline tonic but without the lemon. I don't like Gin myself but have tried it & could easily finish a G & T if they where all this quality. This comes in at 47.3% ABV but you wouldn't think so as it's so smooth.
Poteen (Poitin) for nearly 300 years was known as Ireland's moonshine whiskey. Irish Whiskey- (anglicised as putcheen) or formerly potheen. The term is a diminutive of the word pota 'a pot'; Poitin was traditionally distilled in a small pot. For centuries, Poitin has been produced in pot-stills under the bright moon, and because of this, earned its name as 'The Shine' or 'Moonshine'. The home-brew was strong, some brands were as strong as 70% volume, and had a distinctive dry grainy flavour with a delicate aftertaste that became sweeter as it developed. Some rural Irish people still pour it on wounds and sores as they believe it to have disinfectant properties, and with as high an alcohol volume as it has, it probably does!
Now Irish Poteen has been recognised as a heritage based spirit in its own right and has been awarded Geographical Indicative Status (G.I.) by the EU. Distillates used can be up to 94.7% vol. However, those products made 20 years ago, and in continuous production since then may use an even higher strength distillate, providing an even high level of purity. Only one brand being Knockeen Hills, which is also the only one exclusively using Irish whey distillate, resulting in a unique very soft delivery on the palate is currently in this category, and The Drink Shop is pleased to offer their full range. All products in the range have been awarded at least a Silver Medal (Best in Class) by the I.W.S.C. and a total of 15 medals. Slainte!
