Selected by our vineyard and winemaking team, Mud House Single Vineyard wines are expressions of their terrior, accented by the craft of our winemakers. Hungry Hill vineyard is in the Ure Valley, our most southern valley in Marlborough. After a selective hand harvest the bunches were whole bunch pressed and the free run was settled in tank for 24 hours before being racked into barrels to start fermentation naturally. After primary fermentation the wine underwent partial malolactic fermentation and regular lees stiring. After 10 months in oak the wine was racked from barrel and prepared for bottling.

Colour: Straw yellow.

Nose: Flinty lifted notes of citrus and white fleshed peach with sweet spicy oak.

Palate: The palate is full but refined. Fresh citrus blossom on the front palate leads to a lovely rounded finish with toasty brioche flavours.

Food Matching: Roasted Pork fillet

The Hungry Hill vineyard in the Ure Valley is our most southern valley in Marlborough situated 1 km from the Pacific Coast. The river gravel and lime stone chip soils are unique in Marlborough offering wines of well structured acidity, fine aromatics and minerality. The narrow valley is exposed to cooling sea breezes which moderate the summer temperatures.

Producer Information

A wise gardener once said 'Grapes are the most noble and challenging of fruits'.
These are the words that run through the minds at Mud House as they call for the helicopters in the middle of a freezing Central Otago night or selectively prune every second bunch of grapes from their vines, to lift the quality of the remaining fruit.
Mud House people just love a challenge. Some of them have arrived in viticulture from the coal mines of the corporate world; others have followed their noses through the echelons of wine making. They're united in their determination to find every drop of potential in the grapes they work with.
Within the Mud House family you can discover three ranges. Hay Maker holds its own as a damn good quaffing wine; the Mud House label is a premium range of award winning wines; and Mud House Swan is their boutique reserve tier, offering small parcel, single vineyard estate wines that really stand out from the crowd.
With vineyards in Marlborough, Waipara and Central Otago, Mud House staked a claim on some of New Zealand's best wine land. They let the vines decide where the property ambitions should lie, so future purchases will always follow the dream of the ideal land to grow the perfect grape.
When you take a first sip of Mud House wine, we hope it brings a smile to your lips. No amount of pontificating about winemaking can say as much as that magical moment.
