|Established in 1852, Murrieta are one of the oldest and most respected bodegas of Rioja. Their wines are made in a 'classic' Rioja style and receive long ageing in barrel before release. Their wines are concentrated and long-lived, both red and white, and some - like the Gran Reserva 'Castillo Ygay' - have become legendary amongst Rioja-lovers. Marques de Murrieta have not stood back and stagnated however: Their 300 hectare estate now has Cabernet Sauvignon planted for their Dalmau blend which represents Murrietas avante-garde expression of Riojan terroir. There is also a small estate in Galicia called Pazo Barrantes which produces top quality Albarino.|
The key to the quality and style of Marques de Murrieta wines lies in the unique 300 hectare estate, at the most southerly point of the Rioja Alta. This makes Ygay the largest single estate in La Rioja. A well drained soil, rich in mineral deposits, and with a surprising number of large stones, ensures grapes of a complexity rarely found in the region. In addition, the relatively hot summers at the Ygay estate ensures that wines are always made from ripe, healthy grapes. In addition all the wines are bottled and matured at the Marques de Murrieta cellar.
The 300 hectares of prime vineyard which form the Ygay Estate, (and which make Ygay the largest single estate in La Rioja), means that our winemaker can control all the aspects of the yearly development of the vine. More importantly perhaps, it also allows her to choose the best moment to harvest, and to bring the grapes to the cellar within half an hour of being picked, thus receiving only healthy fruit with no oxidization. Having to rely on only one grape source means that each vintage provides different challenges for the winemaker, but it also means that each vintage has its own personality.
