Description:
Pale green in colour.

Nose: Pure varietal characters of lime zest and blossom complemented by distinctive citrus notes.

Palate: Fresh and flavoursome citrus fruits with intense pink grapefruit supported by hints of sherbet, a mineral edge and a long, dry finish.

The Cossack is a single estate wine with grapes harvested from a granite and laterite outcrop. In the vineyard the block has careful fruit removal prior to harvest to eliminate any berries that do not fit the Cossack style.

Producer Information

This 5 star winery is situated in Frankland River, some 360 kms south of Perth in Western Australia, and was established in 1998 by Ferngrove founder Murray Burton. Murray's faith in this unique vineyard region was well founded. Thanks to its location 90 kms from the coast, between the cooling influence of the converging Southern and Indian oceans, the region has a cool climate that allows grapes to ripen with remarkable consistency from year to year. Delivering fruit and thus wine with characteristic delicacy and clear varietal character.
Ferngrove has established a reputation as a premium wine producer in the Frankland River region, and the winery is fast becoming recognised for its production of outstanding, cool climate wines from estate-grown fruit.
A strong portfolio of brands has also enabled Ferngrove to become established in the key markets of Australia, UK/Europe, Asia and North America.
In its short but highly successful start to premium winemaking, Ferngrove has been awarded an impressive number of trophies and gold medals.
In the 2004 National Wine Show Circuit, seven wines from two vintages received a total of 11 gold medals including the trophy for the Best Western Australian Dry Table Red Wine at the Royal Perth Wine Show.
This success continued in 2005 with a total of 32 medals being won on the National Wine Show Circuit including 9 gold and the trophy for the best blended red at the Royal Hobart International Wine Show in Tasmania.
Also in 2005, Ferngrove's Senior Winemaker Kim Horton was named Young Winemaker of the Year in the inaugural Australian Wine Selector's Shining Lights awards, for his exceptional winemaking ability.
In 2006 Ferngrove enjoyed its most successful year yet on the Australian wine show circuit, amassing an impressive six-trophy and 74-medal haul from 14 shows.
Ferngrove also collected six trophies in 2007 with highlights being awarded the Best Blended Red Wine at the Cowra Wine Show; the Best Red Cabernet Blend at the Murrumbateman Cool Climate Wine Show and Best Riesling, Best Cabernet Sauvignon and Best Exhibitor at the Sheraton Wine Awards. In the UK, Decanter awarded the 2005 Diamond Chardonnay a trophy for the Best Regional Chardonnay over 10 pound.
In 2008, the Estate Sauvignon Blanc won Best Sauvignon Blanc at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show and 2007 Majestic Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded Best Cabernet Sauvignon at the Royal Perth Wine Show. Click here for a full list of our National Wine Shows results.
In his 2011 Australian Wine Companion, prominent Australian wine critic James Halliday, awarded Ferngrove's winery 5 out of 5 stars for the seventh consecutive year. He labels Ferngrove as "an outstanding winery regularly producing wines of exemplary quality and quantity."
