Producer Information

This splendid 7 hectare hillside estate is situated in the small town of
Lessona, near Biella in northern Piemonte. It passed into the De Marchi
family through their relative, Felice Sperino, a passionate viticulturist
and professor in Turin. Paolo De Marchi is the winemaker and owner of
top Chianti Classico estate, Isole e Olena, and he inherited Proprieta
Sperino from his grandfather.
Since the 1970s, Paolo has dreamed of revitalising the Sperino estate and in the last few years has started doing so, together with his elder son, Luca. They plan to increase the area under vineyard to 8 hectares in the future. The climate here is more moderate than in the Langhe, with milder winters due to the protection provided by the Alps to the north. The sandier soil, which is among the most acidic in the wine producing world, together with a
longer growing season, gives wines which are less burly and structured
than those from the Langhe.
