Ron Colon - Our Coffee Story
We are Ron Colón Salvadoreño, a rum passion project that came to life in 2018. Made by a collective of friends from the drinks industry, brought together through our passion for rum and El Salvador. Our aim with this project is to bring together the worlds of coffee and rum, creating new flavour experiences.
Our rums are made from a special blend, creating a complex flavour palate. The blend includes a 6-year-old Salvadoran rum from Licorera Cihuatán, aged and unaged pot-distilled rums from Worthy Park Estate, Monymusk and Hampden distilleries in Jamaica. By combining column-distilled and pot-distilled rums, the overall flavour offers contrasting characteristics that interact to create something quite unique. The aim with our Ron Colón Salvadoreño Coffee-Infused rums is to authentically showcase all the flavours of the Salvadoran coffee beans. Growing on the side of volcanic mountains, El Salvador provides the high altitudes and warm climate that coffee plants thrive in. The coffee-infused Ron Colón Salvadoreño is made with single estate, bourbon varietal beans from the El Ciprés region. It’s a high-altitude style of speciality coffee, grown at 1700m above sea level on the side of El Salvador’s famous Santa Ana volcano.
Following harvest, the beans are dried using the natural process; consistently turned by hand to ensure they dry equally over a period of four weeks. This slow process allows for the bean to interact with the natural sugars from the cherry over a long period of time, giving the final bean a fruit-forward flavour. Once roasted, the beans are then infused directly into Ron Colón rum for 48 hours to create a subtle, fruity flavour.
Each step from growing, processing and roasting is done by Tomas and Andres Trigueros of Jags Head Coffee. The Trigueros family have been producing coffee for over 150 years. Their 4 farms are part of the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range, home to El Salvador’s first denomination of origin, this region is one of the most renowned in the whole country.
The coffee beans are farmed and harvested in El Salvador by Tomas Trigueros, and shipped to the Jags Head roastery in Charlotte, North Carolina, where his son, Andres Trigueros takes the lead as head roaster. Before shipping, every bean is inspected and approved, personally by Tomas.
Our goal is to bring together the best of Salvadoran coffee and rum.
Ron Colón Salvadoreño Coffee Infused Dark Aged Rum 55.5% ABV
Nose: On the nose notes of toasted almonds and woody spice are most apparent. With dark rich fruit and warm vanilla bringing a sweeter note.
Palate: The coffee infusion brings notes of dark chocolate and dried sticky plums. A medium to dark roast gives the rum a rich, warming, nutty flavour with a tiny hint of bitterness. This is balanced from the notes of the aged rum of fresh banana and juicy pineapple.
Ron Colón Salvadoreño Dark Aged Rum 55.5% ABV
Nose: On the nose, the aromas of tropical fruits are most apparent with fresh banana and sticky pineapple. Adding to this there is a deeper aroma of rich raisins and prunes.
Palate: The palate brings the same tropical fruit notes, but with a developing toasted warm spicy caramel flavour. Balanced with creamy milk chocolate, roasted almond and dried chewy apricot notes.
