Origin:In the 30s in Oakland, USA, Victor Jules Bergeron (better known as Trader Vic) opened his first bar and restaurant. The food was apparently fantastic, a mix of Polynesian and Chinese food all cooked up in a Chinese wood fired oven. He was also known for his rum expertise and the bar's tropical concoctions.
He created this drink an evening in 1944 for two of his friends Ham and Carrie Guild from Tahiti. The story goes that Carrie had an orgasm and screamed (which is quite embarrassing front of a busy restaurant) 'MAI TAI - ROA AE' meaning in Tahitian 'Out of this world the best'.
Trader Vic s decided to call the drink the Mai-Tai.
