Antonio Carpano is credited with introducing the world's first sweet vermouth in 1786, in Turin, Italy.

Sweet vermouth are generally red, with the exception of the style Bianco, also an aromatized fortified wine though pale in colour.

Italian sweet vermouths are generally more bitter with the addition of nutmeg, bitter orange peel and wormwood and is used in a plethora of cocktail recipes.
