Woodford Reserve is a super-premium small-batch bourbon with roots at the Labrot & Graham Distillery (circa 1812), a National Historic Landmark in the bluegrass region of central Kentucky. Over 200 years of bourbon knowledge has gone into the making of this award-winning spirit.

Woodford Reserve is a sour mash straight bourbon made at Kentucky's oldest distillery. It is the only bourbon which is triple distilled in copper pot stills, the time-honoured method of production. It is then aged in new charred American oak barrels in the stone ageing warehouses alongside Glenn's Creek.

Woodford Reserve's success is attributable to the bourbon itself and the discerning judgement of the Master Distiller, Chris Morris. It has developed an international following, culminating in its coveted Gold Medal award at the 2001 International Wine & Spirits Competition in London, Gold Medal at the 2003 International Spirit Challenge in London and double Gold Medals at the World Spirits Competition in 2000, 2001 and 2005 - the only bourbon ever to achieve this. Woodford Reserve is a lasting testimony to the best of the distiller's craft.

I enjoyed this but not as much as my expectation. I had read all the history and well perhaps too much history. It\'s a very good drink.

Just like Scotch single malts, Woodford Reserve is made from highly mineralised spring water, and is distilled in copper pot stills, but it is triple distilled like Irish whiskeys. Also Woodford Reserve is aged in new American Oak, just like certain Scotch single malts, except the Scotch malt distillers use barrels which have already contained other spirits (frequently bourbon). This process produces a spirit easily as fine as a Scotch single malt. The grains used, and of course their treatment (no peat smoke) gives it its bourbon character. I treat Woodford Reserve with as much reverie as my Single Malts, anyone who likes Whisky should give this Whiskey a try.

Mixed reception for this Kentucky Bourbon which I bought with high expectations, given its illustrious competitive record. The bottle is interesting, as is the nose - sweeter than one normally sees in American whisky - but the taste lets it down somewhat. By no means unpleasant, it has a reasonable balance of smokey flavours and more subtle vanilla notes, but there is nothing here to suggest a Gold Medal winning spirit whatsoever - indeed, it is if anything just slightly plain. The price point will appeal to some, but there are far more interesting bourbon's out there...
