MACALLAN 1946 - 52 Year Old Special ReleaseFine Scottish Malt
Only available whilst stocks last.
A colour of golden topaz with an nose of citrus, lemon and peat with light apples, a floral fragrance, some wood and spice.
On the palate, Macallan 1946 displays rich phenols and citrus lemon with green apples and a hint of linseed oil. The phenols are rich but not dominating and complement the other flavours. Very subtle wood.
The finish is incredibly long, subtle phenolic and citrus aftertaste.
Distilled more than half a century ago and left to slumber in the oak sherry casks from Spain for which The Macallan is renowned, The Macallan 1946 is an exceptionally rare malt which is 52 years old. Its distinctive flavour is almost certainly a legacy of the post war years when fuel was scarce and the barley would have been kilned over a combination of local peat and coal, imbuing The 1946 with a character more reminiscent of an island malt. Each bottle bears a hand numbered label and is presented in a handcrafted display case, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, individually signed by David Robertson, The Macallan's former Master Distiller. Recognised as a collectors item, a few bottles are still available from select outlets around the world.
"This superb whisky is interesting for several reasons: the orange note is pure Macallan, there are little or no extractive sherry or wood notes and the phenolic levels are reminiscent of an island malt. The whole effect combines very well, the great age supplying depth and character; the casks integrating and rounding the flavours but leaving the whisky fresh and supple." Charles Maclean.
