ISTVAN SZEPSY - Kiralyudvar Tokaji Cuvee Ilona 2000Fine Hungarian White Wine
"Tokaj - the wine of kings and the king of wines." - Louis XIV
From legendary Tokaj winemaker Istvan Szepsy.
In '99, the Ilona is an early bottled five-putts-level sweet wine with an impressively tight structure. Its spicy minerals and peachy, quince-streaked fruit readily accommodate deft tones of barrel aging.
As tasty as it has been from its days in cask, it's a young, firm wine that should develop slowly in the bottle. Its acid-extract structure absorbs strong sugar levels (roughly 135 gl) and allows the wine to seem muscular. Over time its interplay of succulence and wire will continue to delight the open-minded and oxidized-Tokaji traditionalists alike.
1999 Vintage - Outstanding - Approximating the optimum imaginable, and certainly the best year of the decade! Kiralyudvar's patience to harvest later resulted in plentiful quantities of outstanding Asu berries. It allowed the various terroirs to assert themselves in the wines. The wines of this vintage are of superb quality, massively structured, and will be very long-lived.
