Hazelnut Flavoured Nut Liqueurs

Frangelico is a traditional hazelnut liqueur - enjoyed neat, over ice, with coffee or in a wide variety of stylish cocktails. Produced in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy, its origins date back more than 300 years to the presence of early Christian monks living in the hills of the area.

Their skills in fine food and drink would have included the wild hazelnuts and other local ingredients to create a liqueur on which Frangelico is based today.

Its name is also part of the same local legend - an abbreviation of Fra. Angelico, a hermit monk believed to have inhabited the magnificent Piedmont hills during the 17th century.

The Frangelico bottle is an immediate reminder of this distinctive history. Shaped like a monk's habit, with a traditional rope belt around its waist, it is a guarantee of authenticity and quality that links the past right throught to the present day. Taste Frangelico and the whole story falls into place. Wonderful toasted wild hazelnuts, found only in the Italian North, combined with cocoa, vanilla berries and a host of other natural flavours that make up its complex recipe.

Ageing in oak casks adds character and maturity to the final golden liqueur.

The nose of Frangelico gives an instant hit of hazelnut, a reminder of digestive biscuits also crossed my mind, although on taste, the hazelnut becomes very subtle. It’s a light, almost creamy liqueur that leaves only a hint of nut in your mouth. It’s a short, sharp drink that I think will surprise you. Great for a sweet tooth like myself!

When I tell people that my favourite drink is Frangelico with freshly squeezed lime, the usual reaction is "What?". Most people haven't heard of Frangelico. Frangelico is a hazelnut liqueur, that one would be unlikely to find at the local pub, but many bars do have a bottle, usually languishing in the corner until someone who knows what they're talking about asks for it. The story behind this delicious drink is available here on TheDrinkshop.com and on the bottle's label. But, aside from 17th Century Italian monks and wild hazelnuts ('Name of the Rose' anybody?), what's so special about Frangelico? Very simply, it is a unique and very enjoyable taste. On it's own, Frangelico makes a great dessert liqueur. It is very sweet, and extremely hazelnutty, to the point of tasting like chocolate (if hazelnutty is a word). I'm not a fan of the oddly shaped bottle and gothic typeface on the label, but it's the contents that count. For me, Frangelico comes into its own mixed roughly half and half with freshly squeezed lime juice poured over ice. The sour lime balances the sweetness beautifully, to create a drink that is truly enjoyable, with the best of all worlds, tart yet sweet, sour yet sugary; and enjoyable in both the summer and winter months.
