  • Vintage1977

A vintage is declared when the Glenmorangie Distillery Manager has discovered casks from a particular year which, during maturation, have developed extra special characteristics. In the past, vintages have included 1971, 1974 and 1979.

The latest addition is the Glenmorangie 1977 Vintage, which was launched in the UK market in September 1998. This rare bottling of Glenmorangie is matured in oak casks for 21 years and has a distinctive rich aroma.

Colour - Bright Gold.

Nose - Delicate and complex, there is much more oak to the fore, giving a big vanilla almost custurdy depth. Just a sprinkling of pepper hints of a touch of smoke and soft peats. Essentially a dry nose but subtly countered by an occasional glimpse of something grassy, fresh and sweet - not a character you might expect of a whisky at this age.

Taste - Teasingly sweet with a fabulously intense maltiness. The oak cuts in quite fast but that enormous maltiness, crisp and deliciously clean, holds its own throughout. Hints of barley sugar and toffee apple again point towards age.

Finish - The oak is dry but it is the exceptionally clean barley, and even perhaps a lingering trace of smoke which holds sway. Not a particularly complex finale, but sturdy and attractive. The most tantalising hints of smoke and spice seem to linger to the very last.
