Stella Bella - Viognier 2008-11Margaret River White Wine
Appearance: Vibrant green gold.
Aroma: Concentrated, exotic and ethereal aromas of honeysuckle, orange blossom, guava and pear drop essence with whispers of star anise.
Palate: An assortment of fruits - mango, kiwi and guava, tangerine and orange, apricot and peach enriched with a nut-oil slipperiness that provides a soft, luscious mouth-feel. Textures of nut kernel, minerals and a clean dry acid finish, subtly offset the power and intensity of the ripe fruit palate.
Food ideas: Sushi, Sashimi, Vietnamese and Thai foods or Gruyere and soft cheeses.
Drink: Now and over the next 4 years.
The newest Stella Bella 'premium exotic', is a variety steeped in historical mystery and obscurity. Whilst it is agreed that Viognier is an ancient variety, the origin remains unknown and its arrival in France is probably due to the Romans.
The name has two anecdotal origins, one being the Roman outpost city of Vienne in the Rhone and the other a derivation of the word Gehennae, which means the 'road to Hell' - perhaps a portent of challenging viticultural habits.
Nonetheless the wine produced is truly extraordinary and full of tantalizing aromas and flavours.
