Petaluma had one aim when it was founded in the late 1970s, to create the best possible wines from South Australia. Seeking out the finest vineyard sites rather than taking a one-site-fits-all approach to its grapes. Naturally, the search for a Cabernet vineyard took Petaluma to the Terra Rossa soils of Coonawarra. Similarly, the quest for a Riesling site led the team to the Clare Valley. Petaluma pioneered production in the Adelaide Hills and the Piccadilly Valley, which provide Chardonnay of great purity and concentration, including the legendary Tiers Vineyard Chardonnay. This multi-regional approach may be unusual but it ensures that each of Petaluma's wines represents the very best that Australia can produce. With great ageing potential these wines are lauded as one of Australia's answers to European fine wine.
