The 25 ha estate is headed by father-son duo Walter and Markus Kirnbauer and is located in Deutschkreutz, Mittelburgenland, only 5 minutes from the Hungarian border.
Although the vineyards are very close to Neusiedlersee, they also lie at 200m altitude, thus avoid the fogginess that contributes to the botrytised wines in the region. The Kirnbauers apply intensive care and strict yield reduction to the vineyards. The vines have been planted in a high density so that they would be compelled to form deep roots, which promote vitality and a stronger mineral expression in the wines. Strict pruning and frequent foliage treatment in the summer help to ensure that the strength of the vines ultimately concentrates in the grapes. The grapes are harvested solely by hand - no machines are used whatsoever. This makes possible the thorough selection of healthy and fully ripened grapes.
The flagship wine is Das Phantom. It is a marriage of Blaufrankisch, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah; with 18-month aging in small oak barrels. Kirnbauer was the first Austrian red wine producer to come up with the idea of creating a cuvee blend wine.
Indeed, the notion of blending several varieties together had been in Mittelburgenland an extremely exotic proposition.
