Severino Garofano, Botromagno's winemaker and Puglia's leading consultant oenologist, believes that Gravina, a little-known but highly promising DOC situated on the border with Basilicata at an altitude of around 400m, has the greatest potential of any white wine producing region in Puglia. Botromagno was initially a co-operative in the town of Gravina, founded in 1947. After taking over the co-operative in 1991, the d'Agostino family invested heavily in improvements from the cellar to the vineyard, in their determination to convert a languishing co-op into a quality driven, yet viable producer. The result has not been disappointing.
