Domaine Lucien Barrot
The Barrot family have been winemakers in Chateauneuf since 1690 and now own 20 hectares dispersed throughout the AC area (to localise frost damage). Slopes are south or south west facing, soils are red clay and limestone with the traditional large pebbles (galets). Vinification is traditional (no destemming), with all varieties fermented together and then aged in foudres. The wine is not fined or filtered. The wines are classic, and the large proportion of grenache (80%) has much to do with their style, having the appeal of being ready to drink young or kept. Excellent price:quality ratio. First vintage bought: 1989.
