Douglas Laing's Timorous Beastie, a blended malt consisting solely of Highland whiskies from esteemed distilleries such as Dalmore, Glen Garioch, and Glengoyne, joins the ranks of Big Peat and Scallywag. The name is a tribute to Robert Burns' poem 'To a Mouse,' and, contrary to the timid mouse in the poem, this whisky is anything but shy. It presents a bouquet of acacia honey, creamy strawberry-flavoured boiled sweets, dried apricots, and white grapes, with a significant influence of Sherry, alongside a hint of coastal air and classic Highland heather. On the palate, it offers flavours of dried fruits, green apples, and anise, complemented by sweet grist and malt loaf, transitioning to notes of pebble beaches and additional heather on the mid palate. The finish is long and drying, featuring hot cinnamon sweets and fresh bread. Overall, this whisky embodies boldness and vibrancy, challenging the very notion of timorous with its big, brave character and delightful complexity.
